The US economy logged better than expected growth in the final quarter of 2022, even as the Federal Reserve’s aggressive campaign to raise borrowing costs began to weigh more heavily on business activity. The world’s largest economy expanded 2.9 per cent on an annualised basis between September and December.

Microsoft rallies after market as US trading opens with a ‘flash crash’

25 Jan 2023 - A mini ‘flash crash’ greeted traders on the opening as trading in dozens of blue-chip stocks from ExxonMobil to McDonald’s and Mastercard was briefly halted on Tuesday after problems with the New York Stock Exchange’s opening auction caused sharp swings at the start of trading. More than 75 stocks were stopped for hitting volatility limits within 15 seconds of the open.

Overall, overnight’s performance came after initial filings for unemployment insurance fell to their lowest level since late June last week, the Labor Department reported, signalling to investors that the labour market is resilient amid a slowing economy.
